Are Pomeranians Good Pets? Everything You Need to Know

If you've ever seen a Pomeranian trot into a room — fluffy coat bouncing, tail curled perfectly over their back, eyes bright with curiosity — you already know the answer feels obvious. But "are Pomeranians good pets?" is a question worth answering honestly, because the right dog for one family isn't always the right dog for another.

Having raised Pomeranians in our home since 2012, we've seen firsthand what makes this breed so special — and what prospective owners should know before bringing one home.

What Makes Pomeranians Such Wonderful Companions

They Are Deeply Loyal and Loving

Pomeranians form incredibly strong bonds with their people. They want to be near you — on the couch, at your feet, or curled up in your lap. This isn't a dog that's content to live in the backyard. They thrive on human connection and will reward your attention with unwavering loyalty.

Don't let the small size fool you. Pomeranians have the heart of a much larger dog. They are confident, spirited, and genuinely joyful to be around.

They Are Smart and Eager to Learn

Pomeranians are highly intelligent. They pick up commands quickly and genuinely enjoy the mental stimulation of training. With consistency and positive reinforcement, most Pomeranians learn basic obedience with ease — and many go on to learn tricks, agility, and more.

Their intelligence also means they notice everything. They are alert, curious, and keenly aware of their environment, which makes them excellent little watchdogs.

They Fit Beautifully Into Many Lifestyles

One of the most appealing things about Pomeranians is their adaptability. They do wonderfully in apartments and smaller homes because they don't require a large yard to be happy. A daily walk or indoor playtime keeps most Pomeranians content and well-exercised.

They also travel well. Many of our families take their Pomeranians everywhere — on road trips, to outdoor markets, even on flights. Their compact size makes them easy companions for an active lifestyle.

They Come in a Stunning Range of Colors

From soft white to warm cream to black and tan, parti, sable, and tricolor — Pomeranians are one of the most color-diverse breeds in the world. Each coat is unique, and watching a well-bred Pomeranian in full coat is genuinely breathtaking.

At Cream-Puffs Pomeranians, we specialize in white, cream, black and tan, and parti/tricolor Pomeranians — each one raised in our home with love and attention from day one.

What to Realistically Expect

Grooming Takes Commitment

That gorgeous double coat doesn't maintain itself. Pomeranians need regular brushing — ideally a minimum of once a week — to prevent matting and keep their coat healthy and fluffy. They do shed, particularly during the spring, but regular brushing helps to keep that loose fur off of clothes and out of sight.

Many owners also schedule professional grooming every 8-12 weeks for a trim and bath. It's an investment, but it keeps your Pom looking and feeling their best.

They Can Be Vocal

Pomeranians are alert dogs, and they will let you know when something catches their attention. Barking can be managed with early training and socialization, but it's worth knowing that this breed can be more vocal than some others. If you live in a noise-sensitive environment, consistent training from early puppyhood makes a real difference.

They Do Best With Gentle Handling

Because of their small size — most Pomeranians weigh between 3 and 7 pounds — they need to be handled with care. Homes with very young children should take extra precautions to ensure the puppy isn't accidentally dropped or handled too roughly. Older children who understand how to interact gently with a small dog tend to do wonderfully with Pomeranians.

They Need Your Time and Attention

Pomeranians are companion dogs at heart. They do not enjoy being left alone for long stretches every day. If your household is busy and a dog would spend most of its time alone, a Pomeranian may not be the best fit. But if you work from home, have flexible hours, or have family members home a good bit throughout the day, a Pomeranian will absolutely thrive.

Are Pomeranians Good With Families?

Positively Yes! — Pomeranians are affectionate, extremely playful, and genuinely enjoy being part of family life. They do best in homes where they are treated as a true family member, included in daily routines, and given consistent love, interaction and attention. And a child's laughter with play can really give them the "Zoomies"!

Families with older children (generally 7 and up) who know how to handle small dogs tend to have the best experience. Many of our families have multiple children, and their Pomeranians become beloved members of the household almost immediately.

Are Pomeranians Healthy Dogs?

Pomeranians are generally healthy and can live 12–16 years. Like all breeds, they have some predispositions — including dental health (small mouths need regular care) and luxating patella in some lines. Choosing a reputable, health-focused breeder makes an enormous difference in the long-term health of your dog.

At Cream-Puffs Pomeranians, health is our top priority. Our breeding dogs are carefully selected and have passed Embark genetic health risk testing. And our puppies are raised in our home — not in a kennel environment — so they are clean, well-socialized and off to the best possible start.

So, Are Pomeranians Good Pets?

For the right family, absolutely. If you want a dog that is:

  • Deeply loyal and affectionate
  • Smart and fun to train
  • Adaptable to apartment or home living
  • Beautiful, unique, and full of personality
  • A true companion who wants to be with you

...then a Pomeranian might be exactly what you've been looking for.

We've been placing Pomeranians with loving families throughout the USA since 2012, and there is nothing more rewarding than seeing one of our puppies settle into their forever home. If you're ready to learn more, we'd love to hear from you.
